You have to appreciate truth in advertising.
In the listing for a $399,900 property in Juneau, AK, the first words are “investment opportunity.”
But beyond the description and price, it’s the listing photos that really tell the tale.
The first image shows a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment above a garage on Riverside Drive.
The second photo tells more of the story.
Sooo, it’s a bit of a fixer-upper.
The shocking photo sent social media abuzz. Commenters have certainly poked fun at the pile of rubble that was once the house, with these comments (among many others):
“I worry there might be foundation issues.”
“I love a split level.’
“Truly a semi-detached.”
Most of what was once a house 120 feet from the banks of the Mendenhall River is now rubble, after it collapsed into the river on Aug. 5, 2023. Other homes nearby were also threatened and damaged.
The riprap along the river frontage is complete, but the inside portion of the .69-acre lot needs to be cleared and filled.
The listing says the home is condemned and being sold with no structural reports available. The 800-square-foot apartment and garage are still standing and in “relatively good shape.” Meanwhile, the wall near the river needs to be rebuilt and re-sided. The collapsed part of the home needs to be removed, of course. Needless to say, the place is being sold “as is.”
News reports reveal long-term renters had just moved into the home and were away on vacation when a record water release from a nearby dam eroded the banks near the home, sending it into the river.
The renters’ cat, Leo, was inside at the time and went missing after the collapse. Remarkably, he turned up 26 days later.
The listing agent is Marty McKeown, with RE/MAX of Juneau.
