’90s icon Dawn Robinson has admitted she has spent the last three years living in her car because it makes her “feel free” after she spent several years living at her parents’ and manager’s homes.

The 58-year-old—who rose to fame as a member of the popular girl group En Vogue—took to YouTube to lift the lid on her living situation, which she compared to a “camping trip,” while describing the experience as “freeing.”

Robinson, who is originally from Connecticut, admitted that her loved ones had urged her not to tell the public where she was living, but said that she felt she had to share the truth in order to “inspire” her fans and encourage them to see that they are “capable of anything.”

“You guys, for the past almost three years, I have been living in my car. I said it!” she exclaimed at the start of the video, which she captioned, “I took a risk and jumped head first into car life and WOW, what a crazy, fun, sometimes scary ride it’s been lol!”

Robinson explained that she was living with her parents in Las Vegas in 2020, an experience that she said was “wonderful until it wasn’t,” pointing to her mother’s “anger” as being one of the reasons she felt the need to leave the home.

“I love my mom but she became very angry and a lot of her anger she was taken out on me and I was her target all the time and I was like, ‘I can’t deal with this,’ like I respect her too much. I didn’t understand it, I still don’t and it hurt me,” the 90s star revealed of her relationship with her mother.

Because of her rocky relationship with her mom, Robinson decided to move out and live in her car for one month, until her former co-manager invited her to stay with him in Los Angeles.

However, when she arrived at his home, she discovered that there wasn’t enough space for her there—particularly because they both had dogs.

“When I got to his place he actually didn’t have room for me so it turned into, ‘Well I’m going to put you in a hotel for the night,’ and that one night turned into eight months,” she explained.

So, Robinson began to look for her own space, noting that she would ask her manager to view apartments with her—only for him to reject every neighborhood that she found potential homes in.

“I was like, ‘No this is unacceptable,’ because every apartment that I looked at, every single time I would call him and [ask him to] meet me here. I would tell him ahead of time of course and then he wouldn’t meet me there.”

After that, Robinson began “researching car life” and discovered that there’s a “whole community” of people residing in their vehicles.

Having taken an in-depth look at car life, Robinson decided to try it out for herself and in 2022, she began living in her vehicle fulltime, explaining that she felt so much more freedom living on the road.

“I felt free. I felt like I was on a camping trip. It just felt like it was the right thing to do. I didn’t regret it. You know, a lot of celebrities have lived in their cars,” she said.

However, she confessed that sometimes living in her vehicle is “scary,” noting that she has had to learn “what to do in my car and how to do it, like, how to cover my windows and you don’t talk to certain people.”

“You’re careful of telling people that you’re alone, as a woman especially,” she added.

The “Hold On” hitmaker insisted that she wasn’t looking for sympathy by sharing her story and that her journey is about “awakening, healing, forgiving, and growing.”

“It’s not ‘Woe is me.’ I’m learning about who I am, I’m learning myself as a person, as a woman,” she said at the end of the video.

En Vogue garnered up seven Grammy nominations and is still considered to be one of the most successful R&B girl groups.

In 2002, Robinson tied the knot to Dre Allen, however, the couple separated in 2007. Neither has remarried.
