Former first lady Michelle Obama has confirmed that she will not attend President-elect Donald Trump‘s inauguration with her husband Barack Obama—just days after she raised eyebrows when she skipped out on former President Jimmy Carter‘s funeral.
Michelle, 60, has taken a much more laid-back approach to public life in the years since her husband’s presidency ended; however, her decision to miss out on two major political events has sparked questions over her whereabouts and her well-being.
“Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” a spokesperson for the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama confirmed in a statement issued to the Associated Press.
The representative did not provide a reason for Michelle’s absence at the upcoming event.
At the time of Carter’s funeral, which took place in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 9, the mother of two’s advisers confirmed that she was unable to attend the event because she was on an extended vacation in Hawaii and had a “scheduling conflict,” according to CNN.
Though Michelle is no longer obligated to attend political events, it is traditional for living former Presidents and their spouses to attend the funerals of those who have passed. Similarly, they are usually expected to be present at the inauguration of an incoming president.
Michelle, who shares two daughters with Barack, Malia and Sasha, was in attendance when Trump was inaugurated in 2017, and she has also been by her husband’s side at a number of other high-profile political events since 2017, when he officially left the White House.
However, in 2023, Michelle—who has been outspoken in her criticism of Trump over the years—laid bare her difficulty at sitting through his inauguration, recalling the high “emotion” she felt during the lead-up to the ceremony.
“There were tears, there was that emotion,” she said during an episode of her “The Light Podcast.” “But then to sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display … there was no diversity, there was no color on that stage, there was no reflection of the broader sense of America.”
It is currently not known whether Michelle is still in Hawaii, where she and Barack have regularly vacationed with their kids for years.
For many years, the family used the same vacation rental for their Hawaiian getaways; however, reports began emerging in 2020 that the pair were lining up their own property on the island of Oahu—a stunning beachfront home that is part of a trio of residences being developed by their close friend, Marty Nesbitt.
Nesbitt purchased a prime plot of waterfront land for the eye-watering sum of $8.1 million back in 2015 and began building a luxury compound of homes, one of which is rumored to have been earmarked for the Obamas.
Former President Obama was pictured visiting the development in 2022, when construction was still underway, with images published by DailyMail.com showing him chatting with workers, while revealing that the structure was nearing completion.
However, the couple also own several properties elsewhere in the U.S., where Michelle might be hunkering down, including a mansion in Washington, D.C., another in Chicago, and a vacation property in Martha’s Vineyard.
According to multiple reports, the D.C. home, which is in the upscale neighborhood of Kalorama Heights—where Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were based during Trump’s first presidency—still serves as the couple’s main residence, more than seven years after they purchased it in an off-market deal.
The couple is understood to have paid $8.1 million for the nine-bedroom, 8.5-bathroom residence, which previously served as the home of Joe Lockhart, former press secretary to then-President Bill Clinton.
In 2018, Michelle opened up about their move into the property from the White House, joking to TV host Ellen DeGeneres that her husband had been “shortchanged” by getting the “smallest room” as his office space.
“He still talks about this,” she told DeGeneres. “He got so shortchanged on this whole deal. He doesn’t have enough closet space—sorry! He’s got the smallest room for his office.”
Should Barack require a bit more space, however, he need only venture to one of their other homes, including their $1.65 million property in the tony Chicago neighborhood of Kenwood. The Obamas snapped up that property back in 2005, before Barack entered the White House for his first term, and they are thought to still own it.
However, it’s believed that the family spends much less time in the six-bedroom residence than they do at their other homes, although the property remains under the watch of a round-the-clock security team.
Last, but by no means least, is the couple’s ultralavish Martha’s Vineyard retreat, which they are said to have bought for the staggering price of $11.75 million back in 2019.
The seven-bedroom, 8.5-bathroom stunner came complete with its private stretch of coastline and two guest wings, as well as a swimming pool, sundeck, and a marble soaking tub.
