Two-time Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou has admitted that he is “struggling financially,” despite spending 30 years working as a successful actor and racking up roles in a number of major movie franchises, including the hit Marvel flick “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

The 60-year-old “Gladiator” star lifted the lid on the monetary issues he is facing as a person of color in Hollywood while speaking on CNN’s “African Voices Changemakers,” just over a year after he listed his Los Angeles home for rent.

Speaking to host Larry Madowo, Hounsou confessed that while he has been working steadily for three decades, he is still “struggling to make a living,” something that he blames, at least in part, on the fact that he is “definitely underpaid.”

“I’m still struggling to make a living,” the actor divulged. “I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, and yet, I’m still struggling financially. I’m definitely underpaid.”

His shocking confession comes just one year after he sought a tenant for his Westchester, CA, home.

The actor initially put the property on the rental market in September 2023 for $12,500 per month. He quickly reduced that amount to $11,750 in October.

Yet he struggled to find a tenant and was forced to once again lower the amount, ultimately leasing the home to an unknown renter for $10,500 per month in February 2024.

Although it’s unclear where Hounsou is currently living, he made clear during his CNN interview that he believes his unfair treatment and lack of “respect” in the movie industry have had a huge impact on his financial situation.

Additionally, the Hollywood heavyweight said he believes he’s been snubbed for a number of awards due to his appearance.

“I was nominated for the Golden Globe, but they ignored me for the Oscars because they thought that I had just come off the boat and the streets,” he said. “Even though I successfully did that, they just didn’t feel like I was an actor to whom they should pay any respect.”

He went on to call out the “systemic racism” he continues to witness in Hollywood, adding that he believes the industry still has a lot to do before it can consider itself in any way diverse.

“This conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go. Systemic racism won’t change like that anytime soon,” he warned.

In 2023, Hounsou opened up about his financial struggles while speaking to The Guardian. He told the outlet that he had “yet to meet a film that paid me fairly.”

He added: “I still have to prove why I need to get paid. They always come at me with a complete lowball: ‘We only have this much for the role, but we love you so much and we really think you can bring so much.’”

Hounsou has not revealed whether his decision to rent out his home, which he purchased via a trust for $2.1 million in 2020, was made in an attempt to generate more financial stability.
