Controversial politician Matt Gaetz has been thrust into the center of another media firestorm after President-elect Donald Trump named the former Florida representative as his pick for attorney general, prompting fury from left-wing lawmakers.
In the wake of Trump’s announcement, Gaetz, 42, who was born in Hollywood, FL, immediately resigned his seat in Congress, where he is the subject of a years-long ethics investigation into allegations involving drugs, bribes, and sex with minors.
That investigation has led many to condemn his nomination for attorney general and sparked increasing demand on both sides of the aisle for the congressional report on the investigation to be released to the public ahead of Gaetz’s confirmation hearing.
According to Newsweek, House Speaker Mike Johnson said last week he would “strongly request” that the ethics report on Gaetz never be released publicly.
However, some information about the investigation has already come to light, including reports that one woman testified to the House Ethics Committee that Gaetz not only paid her for sex but that she also witnessed the politician have sex with a 17 year old at a party.
In an interview with The Washington Post, the unnamed woman’s lawyer, Joel Leppard, said that the alleged incidents occurred at a party in July 2017, adding that Gaetz was not aware of the second woman’s age at the time, although claiming he was later informed.
Today, nearly 100 House Democrats wrote a letter to the House Ethics Committee demanding that the report into Gaetz’s misconduct be released, insisting that his decision to resign from Congress should not prevent the investigation findings from being made public.
“Representative Gaetz’s abrupt resignation from Congress should not circumvent the Senate’s ability to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities,” the letter read.
Still, Trump appears determined to ensure that his candidate is confirmed at his hearing, with reports suggesting that he has been personally “squeezing” senators to support the nomination.
“One thing about Donald Trump, people should never confuse his support for one of his nominees as a tactical or strategic tool for somebody else,” Sen. Kevin Cramer told Axios. “And at least to this point, he’s putting his own political capital behind it.”
Gaetz’s nomination still needs to be passed to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will then vote on whether to send it on to the full Senate. However, the Florida-born politician has received the public support of another close Trump ally, Elon Musk, who described him as America’s future “hammer of justice” in a post on X.
“Matt Gaetz has 3 critical assets that are needed for the AG role: a big brain, a spine of steel and an axe to grind,” Musk wrote. “He is the Judge Dredd America needs to clean up a corrupt system and put powerful bad actors in prison. Gaetz will be our Hammer of Justice.”
Although Gaetz’s nomination has sparked a huge scandal, it has also brought one rather light-hearted anecdote to light regarding his childhood home and its starring role in hit 1998 movie “The Truman Show.”
The exterior home, which is in Seaside, FL, was used as the abode that Truman, played by Jim Carrey, shared with his wife Meryl, played by Laura Linney. The residence’s role in the film is something Gaetz’s parents, Don and Vicky, celebrate to this day.
‘The Truman Show’ house
The charming, buttercup-yellow cottage where Truman lives in the movie is still owned by Gaetz’s parents in real life.
They leaned into their movie-famous home. A photo of a sign on their white, picket-fence gate announces its connection to the movie, (helpful for ogling tourists) along with the family’s names, including Matt and his sibling, Erin: “The Truman House. Don & Vicky Gaetz. Matthew & Erin.”
The Gaetz family purchased the seaside property in 1991 for $125,000. It was one of the first in the master-planned community.
However, the classic cottage is now estimated to be worth $2.7 million, according to Realtor.com®, although that number may well increase courtesy of the priceless publicity brought on by its role in the hit movie.
According to a 2018 profile on Gaetz by The Washington Post, Gaetz’s family “relocated from southern Florida to the Panhandle” when he was 10 years old and moved into the picture-perfect house—seven years before it was featured in “The Truman Show.”
The pastel-hued charmer features four bedrooms and four baths within 2,136 square feet.
Located on Florida’s Gulf of Mexico and steps from the beach, the two-story dwelling has a fireplace. And like many of the resort community’s homes, it has a soft-colored facade and is surrounded by a white picket fence and front porch.
Set in an idyllic vacation spot, the home is part of a quaint community and it turns out, has the perfect look for a film about a town set on a sound stage.
The family has kept the number 36 affixed above the front of the home (the street number from the movie), where Carrey’s Truman would head out each day with his trademark greeting: “Good morning, and in case I don’t see ya—good afternoon, good evening, and good night!”
